THE SWIGERT FAMILY

The James Swigert Family
By Lois Adams and Lester Swigert,1976.
From memories compiled by Mossyrock Grange Historical Committee.

Up until 1872, when the Swigert families moved to Oregon, there is not much information. They cam to Oregon from Peoria, Illinois. Their father (Grandpa) Swigert owned property there that now is the heart of the City of Protland.

When Mary and James Swigert came to Oregon, they had one child, Allen. He was just six months old at that time. Later on, while still in Oregon, the twins Montie and Harry were born.

We do not have any information on why the Swigerts came to Oregon or what they did after they got there. They knew some of the people that were already there. The Landes family and the Swigert families, both early settlers in the Mossyrock area, lived in the same neighborhood, wen to the same school, belonged to the same church in Oregon before coming to the Mossyrock Area. Before settling in Mossyrock, Mr. Landes and James Swigert came to Mossyrock and selected adjoining homestead sites. This was in 1879. they came to this area over a trail from the Columbia River. The journey must have taken quite a few days. We don't konw whether or not they knew anyone here. They just liked the looks of the nice valley.
