TARDINESS

Students arriving after 8:30 are tardy (except for late bus arrivals).

Tardy students are to report to the office upon arrival.

Frequent tardiness will be addressed by a phone call or a letter home to a parent and will result in a disciplinary action. An excused tardy is one that is given for medical/dental reasons, late bus, or a family emergency. Any others will be unexcused, including tardiness as a result of oversleeping, missing the bus, or lingering over breakfast in the cafeteria. A note or call from a parent/guardian must accompany a child in order to excuse their tardiness.

ATTENDANCE

Students are to be in school except in cases of emergency, illness, or school approved activities. If a student is absent from school, he or she is required to bring a note to school within two days of returning to school. This note must include the student’s name, the reason for and date of the absence, and the signature of a parent/guardian.

Students who do not bring a note within two days of their return will be considered truant or unexcused.

It is helpful if parents call and advise the office of their child’s absence and to make arrangements for any homework.

The state’s attendance laws now require all schools to:

• notify parents after the student’s first unexcused absence.

• schedule a conference with parents after any second unexcused absence in a month.

• file a petition in juvenile court after seven unexcused absences in a month or after 10 in a school year.

If found in violation of the school’s attendance laws, parents, guardians, and/or students may be required by the courts to: provide community service at the child’s school, pay $25 in fines for each day of unexcused absence from school, and/or attend a conference or conferences to analyze the cause of the child’s absences.
